“I always forget about this part.”

Blondie’s got his eyes closed, has wedged himself up in the corner of the restaurant booth. Even his natural terse incommunicability has dropped away, to reveal a stark unhappiness.

“I know,” Tuco says. Squeezes his partner’s hand as hard as he dares, under the table.

First night out, that’s fine. They’ll drive long into the night as long as they want, stopping off on the side of the road to sleep whenever they’re tired. Everything starting fresh and new.

Second night is a little soon, for Blondie to drop into that malaise he’s in the habit of; but it’s happened this way before. When a traffic jam leaves them honking and nowhere for six hours, or they get cheated up the junction, or sometimes nothing at all- when real life reasserts itself with a vengeance and leaves him feeling rough again. “You’ll be okay again, you know that. You always bounce back.”

“I don’t have any right to be like this in the first place. This whole trip was my idea- why don’t you tell me to cheer up?”

#otp: nothing like a good cigar is my biggest hobby… and my greatest fear.

Here’s fanart for you, @thatdeepandlovelydark ! I so loved your snippet about
Tuco’s gun (X), I just had to draw it (…I think I started this before your GBU ‘70s AU
even existed! I work so darn slow, ahaha). Artistic licence used very liberally
once again.

thatdeepandlovelydark:

Skagway, 1897. It takes a bold man to try to hustle the most lawless town in Christendom; a bold man, or else an idiot, and Tuco Ramírez does not much mind which you think he is. He has a story to tell. About this time he won a hundred thousand dollars, in the most astonishing three-way duel the West ever did see…

(Somebody is going to interrupt him.)

(Somebody always does.)

whoo, author reveals times! Abstruse, elliptical, and slashy, and I’m unusually pleased with how this turned out. Never did fic for this fandom before, but it was great fun.
